Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers

Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out to our support team for assistance.

Why is data sanitization necessary if devices are being recycled?

Deleting files or formatting a drive does not permanently remove data. Recoverable information can remain accessible using currently known recovery techniques, even after equipment is no longer in use. Proper data sanitization, performed in accordance with recognized standards such as NIST SP 800-88, ensures that data cannot be read back and protects organizations from data breaches, regulatory penalties, and reputational damage.

What data sanitization standards does OKeWaste follow?

OKeWaste performs data sanitization in alignment with NIST SP 800-88 Revision 1, the internationally recognized guideline for media sanitization. Sanitization methods are selected based on the type of storage media and are applied using documented, auditable procedures designed to prevent data recovery using currently known techniques.

Do you provide proof that data was properly sanitized?

Yes. Upon completion of qualifying services, OKeWaste issues a Data Sanitization Certificate covering all devices processed within a batch. This certificate supports audit requirements and demonstrates due diligence for compliance with regulations and standards governing sensitive data, including HIPAA, PHI, GDPR, and Canadian privacy regulations.

What happens to equipment after data sanitization?

OKeWaste does not reuse, resell, or refurbish data-bearing devices. All data-bearing equipment is securely sanitized or physically destroyed prior to material recovery. Once rendered completely data-inaccessible, the remaining materials are responsibly recycled through approved downstream partners to recover metals and other reusable resources, ensuring environmental responsibility without compromising data security.

How does OKeWaste ensure security during pickup and transportation?

OKeWaste provides secure, logged local pickup and maintains a documented chain of custody from the point of collection through final processing. Assets are tracked and handled by trained personnel at every stage, reducing the risks commonly associated with shipping, third-party handling, or uncontrolled transport of sensitive IT assets.
